Its also important to remember that the only reason these functions feel so illegitimate is that we are acclimated to friendly functions like x+n x^n and sin x. In fairness, a function is just a construct that takes a number and gives you another number, so it's not unfair or even questionable to call the piece-wise a function. That said, it will always feel wrong.
